Although crime rates in Canada have been going down, gang violence has been increasing. In many Canadian cities young gang members with guns have become a deadly problem. They are not only killing each other, but sometimes innocent people are caught in the crossfire. During the recent election campaign, politicians promised tougher sentences for gun crimes after a Boxing Day shootout between rival gangs in Toronto killed an innocent bystander. Canada’s largest city is battling a frightening increase in gun violence. In 2005, there were more deaths by gunfire in Toronto than in any other year.
