It’s been 30 years since Terry Fox died in a British Columbia hospital, one month short of his 23rd birthday and nine months after he was forced to give up his cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research. Canada’s Amazing Neptune Project

The Trial of Robert Pickton

On the Rocks: A B.C. Ferry Sinks

In late March 2006 a giant passenger ferry hit a rock and sank near the small fishing village of Hartley Bay in British Columbia. Two people died when Queen of the North went down, in the dead of the night. But more than a hundred others were rescued and given shelter by the people of Hartley Bay. In this News in Review story we’ll look at that amazing rescue. We’ll also examine what might have caused the ferry to stray off course and run aground.

Gang Wars: Bloodbath in Vancouver

Police across Canada are trying to crack down on heavily armed gangs that have turned some of our cities into battlegrounds. During the recent election campaign, politicians promised tougher sentences for gun crimes after a Boxing Day shootout between rival gangs in Toronto killed an innocent bystander. But Toronto isn’t the only city with a gang problem. In Vancouver, Indo-Canadian gangs have gone on a killing rampage in recent years. Wildlife Rescue: Controversy in B.C.

British Columbia is home to an amazing variety of wildlife. It also has a large number of wildlife rescue centres that treat sick and injured animals. But not everyone thinks these rescue centres are a good idea. In this News in Review story we’ll travel to British Columbia and show you how workers at the centres try to save all kinds of animals. Luna’s Story: Clash Over a Lost Whale

Three years ago a young killer whale was separated from its family off the coast of British Columbia. It began hanging around a public dock in the community of Gold River and making a lot of human friends. When it got too friendly for public safety, officials made plans to try to return it to its pod. But a native community blocked those plans because it believed that Luna is the spirit of a dead chief. In this issue we’ll look at Luna’s amazing adventure, and how a cultural clash was eventually avoided.
