The Bloodbath in Syria

For almost a year hundreds of thousands of people have been staging massive protests in the streets of Syria. They are demanding the resignation of the country’s ruler, Bashar al-Assad. But his regime’s response has been a bloody one, and thousands of protesters have been gunned down.     The U.S. Sends More Toops to Iraq

    more American soldiers to Iraq. The decision came a month after an American
    government study group delivered a devastating verdict on that war. It called the

    Lebanon War: Israel Battles Hezbollah

    In July, the Middle East erupted in flames again, as Israeli forces battled Hezbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon. Israeli warplanes bombed targets all over Lebanon. Hezbollah fired volleys of rockets into northern Israel. Hundreds of people were killed, most of them civilians. In this News in Review story we’ll look at the fighting and at diplomatic efforts to try to get both sides to agree to a lasting and effective ceasefire.

    Election Shock: The Hamas Victory

    In late January, the militant Islamic group Hamas surprised the world by winning the Palestinian parliamentary elections. Many countries were also shocked, because they consider this group to be a terrorist organization.     Forced Out: Syrian Troops Leave Lebanon

    On February 14, 2005, Rafik Hariri, the former prime minister of Lebanon, was killed by a huge bomb blast in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Hariri was a popular opposition leader, and many of his supporters blamed Syria for his death. They held giant street rallies demanding the withdrawal of thousands of Syrian troops stationed in Lebanon. Three weeks later the Syrians announced that their soldiers would be out of Lebanon by April. In this News in Review story we’ll look at the events leading to the Syrian withdrawal and examine what that pullout could mean for the future of the region.
